The Team

Ronnie Grabowski has lived in Australia for almost 40 years and from the very beginning has been a 4×4 enthusiast. Initially, it started with Land Rover (ex-army), Holden Jackaroo and Nissan Patrol. In later years, there was only Toyota for him.

Ronnie established NovaGra Pty Ltd 25 years ago, and has been organizing tours in Australia and New Zealand for small private groups ever since. Ronnie hosts these tours with great passion and commitment. His clients are mainly tourists from Ronnie’s birth country, Poland.

During his tours in Australia, he has travelled thousands of kilometers through the Australian outback, showing visitors from overseas the charms of this unique country. Bungle Bungle, Kimberley, Palm Valley, Ormiston Gorge, Kakadu and many more – these are places that he will always gladly come back to.

For many years, his great dream has been to drive his own 4×4 car through Asia to Europe.

A few years ago, he participated in a winter expedition to Siberia. It was then that he decided to organize something similar. His longtime friend Lukas Dyrak, who for 12 years has been organizing 4×4 expeditions through Asia, Africa and Europe, organized the expedition to Siberia. Lukas and Ronnie created a plan to travel from Sydney to London over land, with Lukas also being a Tour Guide on this journey.

The plans going forward are exciting. Starting with the Sydney-London trip and then a winter expedition to Siberia, New Year’s Eve in Africa, USA with its’ great 4×4 routes, and from Canada to Alaska.

Lukasz Dyrak. Over the past 12 years he has traveled many countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, organizing 4×4 expeditions. He has a lot of experience in running such trips. He drove to Dakar, took a trip to Iceland and winter rides in the faraway Siberia.

He is a traveler, photographer, and mechanic. Currently, he drives another Nissan Patrol with a BMW M57 engine. He speaks good English and will communicate in Russian. He lives permanently in UK.

Insurance

Third Party Insurance

Third Party Insurance is compulsory and is available at the borders of the following countries:

  • Russia
  • Mongolia
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Tajikistan
  • Uzbekistan

The Green CardEU

A Green Card is a document that is recognised in over 40 countries throughout Europe and is proof that the minimum legal requirements for third party liability insurance are met, and is available at the borders mentioned above.

NOTE: This does not insure your car in case of accident or theft.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Australian insurance companies will not insure your car while it is overseas so you will need to find a company that will insure your vehicle while touring around other countries.

Please see Lloyds of London for insurance options or brokers
http://www.lloyds.com/

International Driver Permit

If you intend to drive overseas, then you may want to consider purchasing an International Driving Permit (IDP).

This permit is an internationally recognised translation of your current drivers’ licence in nine different languages, namely English, Spanish, Japanese, Greek, German, Arabic, Chinese, Russian and French.

An IDP may be required to drive legally in some countries or to rent a vehicle, and can be helpful to tourists who find themselves in need of a form of identification in a language other than English.

This permit is only valid if you carry your domestic driver’s licence along with it and is valid for 12 months, unless your Australian licence expires earlier.

You can purchase an IDP through your local AAA affiliate, either online or at a branch. To apply, you will need to be over 18 years of age, have a valid Australian driver’s licence, a recent, valid passport photo, and you will need to pay a fee. Please visit https://www.aaa.asn.au/pages/members/ for further information.

Carnet de Passage en Douane (Carnet CPD)

A Carnet de Passage en Douane (Carnet CPD) allows visitors to temporarily import a motor vehicle or motorcycle overseas for a limited period of time (maximum 12 months), without the need for payment of customs duties, sales taxes or the duties that would otherwise apply.

This can be extended if necessary but must be organised prior to the original document expiring. A Carnet is essential for the temporary importation of vehicles into New Zealand, most African, Asian, Middle East and South American countries.

It is not required for motor vehicles, campervans and motorcycles entering the UK, Europe or the continent of North America for touring purposes.

Spare parts for cars

Each car will need to be serviced throughout the trip. This will more than likely be in Russia, after we have passed through Mongolia. However, it is important that you carry your own spare parts.

As example, spare parts to carry with you will be:

  • Oil Filters
  • Fuel Filters
  • Air Filters

NOTE: Oils and greases are widely available in Russia.

Good suspension in your car is a necessity for this long journey. Part of our tour (mainly in Asia), will be on gravel and sandy roads. We will also be passing through small streams and rivers.

A mechanic with tools and equipment will travel with us and whenever needed, will be able to help with repairs.

If necessary, we will help tow the car to the nearest garage for any major repairs.

Currency

Euros or US Dollars, can be exchanged for local currency widely throughout Asia. Credit cards are accepted in larger cities.

In Europe all currency can be exchanged almost everywhere and credit cards are accepted in many places.

Visa requirements

  • Russia – three visa entries
  • Kazakhstan – two entries
  • Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan with GBAO permit – is necessary for any travel to the Pamir.

Accommodation

Most accommodation is planned in 3 star hotels and motels. However, there will be days where, due to the lack of accommodation, mainly in Asia – we will sleep in camping sites or roadside car parks.

For this reason, each participant is required to carry adequate sleeping equipment.

Meals

We will be able to buy all necessary food in Russia. The food supply in Russia is very good and prices are lower then in Australia.

Small roadside restaurants that serve local food throughout Asia are popular. There should be no problems with the food supply during the entire trip.

Weather

The months of August and September experience warm weather. However, in the mountains of Pamir we will be at a fairly high altitude and sometimes snow can be expected.

Cold nights also occur in the Steppes (grasslands) of Mongolia and Uzbekistan.

Please be prepared for these cold temperatures. The average day temperature throughout the trip is 14-26°C, and the nights could expect about 6-12°C, with the Steppes being colder.
